Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens the bones, making them brittle and susceptible to fractures.
In this country, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men over the age of 50 will suffer an osteoporotic breaking of a bone. These breaks can be life-threatening and a major cause of pain and disability, particularly as we get older.
Certain symptoms of Osteoporosis to look out for might include:
• Loss of height over time
• A stooped posture
• A bone that breaks much more easily than expected
• Back pain, caused by a fractured or collapsed vertebra
How pilates helps people with Osteoporosis
• Increasing bone density when body parts move against the force of gravity
• Increasing strength and muscle mass, which in turn help to support the bones
• Improving balance, which can help prevent falls that might result in a bone fracture
• Improving range of motion and posture, which can help keep the bones in alignment and prevent painful pinched nerves and muscle spasms in the back.
You’ve probably heard that weight-bearing exercises — such as walking — can help reduce the risk of a broken bone when you have osteoporosis. But don’t overlook Pilates as a potential skeleton-saving workout for those with low bone density.
In my classes I try to match your needs with the exercises base on your flexibility and range of movements.
